No, Lawn mowers use 2 big heavy metal blades, where as string trimmers use a piece of wire covered in plastic whizzing round to anhialate grass and weeds (hence "string Trimmer")

a string trimmer is hard to use to cut a whole yard
but they are great fro edging

you will still need a mower to cut the main lawn area

No they are not. Mower blades are metal while string trimmers have a plastic string and both are used for different things.

Lawn mowers are used to cut your grass at an even level. If you have a small yard like in a town or city then a 21" push mower should get the job done. If thats the case then i suggest just comparing prices online at places like walmart and lowe's before you make a decision. Whereas if you live in the country and have a relatively large lawn and significant hills then you may want to spring for a riding mower.

String trimmers simply are used for trim work. String trimmers or weed whackers are used to cut grass in places your mower doesn't reach like around a flag pole, under playground equipment, or alongside walls. And if you are really good you can even use them to trim long blades of grass that are parallel to the ground and stick out into flower beds and sidewalks.

From what I know about lawn edgers you should need one unless you are putting in a new flowerbed or mulch bed. There are gas powered ones that are used to make a nice clean edge when you make a new bed but again, depending no the size of your project you can do just as good of a job with a shovel.
