It is designed to break when you hit a stump. You will need to take it in for service and have that checked and replaced. The shear key is a softer metal than the crankshaft. The key is made soft so it breaks before damage happens to the keyway or the shaft. The shear key keeps the flywheel in the proper spot and keeps the engine properly timed. It can be replaced by removing the engine cowling and the flywheel. You may need a puller to remove the flywheel. It is not a hard job if you have the tools.
