How can I fix my lawn mower?
My lawn mower is a 3.5hp Tecumseh. I have been doing some heavy mowing (tall grass, weeds), and now, the mower will start, and then die after a few seconds of running. I have cleaned out underneath, and it has both oil and gasoline. Do I need a new mower? This is the last season I will need this mower because I am moving to a house with no lawn.

If it still starts, and shuts back off….. its a carb problem 99 percent of the time…..
The float doesn’t sound stuck, the main jet (up that hole the float bowl nut goes up) is clogged…. but first make sure gas is getting to the carb at a good rate (take the fuel line off at the carb and let it go real quick)
try cleaning the sparkplug with gas and a wire brush!
It’s probably time to clean the carborator. You may want to start with some spray cleaner before taking it apart. There may be water in the gas tank too if your mower has been outside.
Nine chances out of ten the fuel filter needs replacement. A clogged filter will give the symptoms you’ve described.
nine times out of ten a push mower will not have a fuel filter.
starting & dieing indicates that the carb is not able to get the fuel from the bowl into the main jet. Your carb needs cleaned.
The fuel bowl float is probably sticking closed due to dirt. Remove the bowl carefully and dump any fuel, being carefull of small parts (the valve may have a spring that came loose). Operate the float valve manually and reinstall the bowl. You should also clean or replace the air filter.
Sounds like it’s not getting gas or has water in the gas. Be sure the gas in the tank is clean withno water. Also, take the fuel bowl off and clean any gunk or water out. If that still doesn’t do it then the carb needs to be cleaned or rebuilt
