how to repair a gasket on a gear box for snapper lawn mower?

i removed and open the gear box thinking the chain had broke,but everything looks good,but can not complete remove plate that screws on to gear box.i would like to clean it and put another gasket on it.i need your help.

    An auto parts store can sell you a gasket that comes in a tube. Permatex, Liquid Gasket ETC. If you follow instructions on the tube you can form a gasket which will seal and protect your gearbox.
