my riding lawn mower loses power and nearly cuts off when I engage the blades?
We changed the spark plug and fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, and checked for obstacles in the belt that engages the blades. The battery was replaced last summer.

are you at full idle? If so chck to see the pulleys are not worn out and need to be replaced. Take the drive belt off and move each pulley by hand they should move freely. Other that that it would most likely be carb, timing or ignition
your probably starting on a high level of grass start on your driveway if you have to
is your grass 3' thick?? if so mow more often or if not you should check your spark plugs I bet they are fould
something obstructing the delivery of power to the blades
or your mower has lost compression in the engine.
or simply the ignition timing is incorrect.
could be a simple carburator adjustment. What you are saying is that when under a load, you lose power.
did you check the seat switch? this a saftey feature most newer riding lawn mowers have that shuts off the ignition when you stand up off the seat when the blades are engaged. look under the seat there should be a small toggle switch that is pushed down by the weight of the person useing the mower.
The pulleys move with ease (when not engaged) and the pulley brakes disengage when they are engaged? Theres nothing under the deck that may be catching?
have a governor on the thing? may be malfunctioning or carb adjustment needed for sure
