self propelled lawn mower rear right wheel will not propel and it locks when i pull mower backward?

after some research i've seen terms like woodruff key... have looked at both rear wheels to see if i can figure out why one works and the other doesn't. any suggestions?

is gear trouble an expensive thing to fix?

"Gear trouble" is kind of like saying "family problems". A broad term that doesn’t specify very much. Your drive wheels are on either a splined or keyed (very likely a woodruff key) shaft. The splines or key are likely worn to where the wheel won’t drive but still have enough hold to keep it from freewheeling. If you are handy you can remove the wheel yourself and locate the problem or take it to a repair shop. And no, it shouldn’t be too expensive.

If you have a belt driven propulsion system, the pulley can become worn down which makes it easy for the belt to slip off. If it goes down you have no pulling, but you can move the mower freely. If it slips off up, it is caught between the pulley and the frame which will give you the no pull or push scenario. Had the same problem recently with my rear-propelled Troy Built. Got a new belt and pulley and she works fine now. Hope this helps someone.
