I own a 25 year old Honda mower that is self-propelled and rear bagging. It has operated with a minimum of problems and thrived on abuse. It starts every spring on the second, if not the first, pull of the starter cord.

Having said that, my parents bought a Honda about 8 years ago, and it NEVER ran properly, and they have had two mowers since. So… while Honda makes an excellent product, no matter what you buy, there is a chance of getting a lemon.

My advice would be to visit your local small engine repair shop and ask them what they would recommend. Depending on how well you trust them, go with that. If you see 25 troy-built mowers in their yard (unlikely)…. don’t take one to them!!!

Anyway, good luck. Hope my advice helps.

When I went shopping for a lawn mower, I wanted to get the best normally available, because I was tired of dicking around with something that almost worked.

As recommended, I got a Troy-Bilt, and have been happy with it. As you note, self-propelled is an important consideration. Because I have a large lawn growing on sandy soil, I prefer to mulch the grass, rather than bagging and hauling it. (Living close to a nearly-defunct sawmill means there’s lots of well-aged compost available.)

Having a motor that did not require a gas/oil mixture reduced the "oops" factor.
