What kind of oil and how much oil do I put in a john deere riding mower?
I have a john deere 48 inch cut riding mower and I am wondering how much oil that I need to put in it and what kind of oil do I use? How do I change the oil filter also?

It should have recommended type of oil in the owners manual… I know UI don’t keep mine around either. You could try looking at the John Deere website or calling a reputable lawn mower repair place. If all else fails go for straight 30 it will say SAE 30 on the bottle.
As far as how much.. it should have a dipstick or if the filler hole is low on the crankcase it will be to the top of the filler hole.
Oil filter… It may not have an oil filter on it. Usually less than 20 HP doesn’t. If it does you’ll see a cylinder a little larger than can on the side of the engine. Mine, a craftsman is on the left side toward the back of the engine. Turn it left-loose, and after a few turns it will drop off.
If it isn’t going to be exposed to or started in temperatures below 0 degrees F, use a standard 30 weight (30w) motor oil. If it is going to be exposed to cold temperatures, use a 10w-30 motor oil. For the amount, check the instruction manual. Or, fill it and check the level with the dipstick. Do not overfill it, as this can cause excessive oil pressure and oil blow-by in the cylinder.
As for how to change the oil filter, also check the manual. Look on line for your particular model if you don’t have the manual. Most companies have PDFs of their documentation on their websites these days.
Look at your manual or check with the engine manufacture. The latest oil out has an API rating of SM. Most manufactures recommend SJ. SM has less zinc and phosphorus. These are critical to small engines. They are being removed from motor oils due to harming the cat converter. Be sure of what you are putting in it.
