What lawn mower is best for cutting thick sod?

Are there any strong powered electric or do I need to go gas?
I have a small yard but current electric won't take it.

    Any Gas Mower will work fine. Just keep it maintained and have the blade sharpened twice a season and you will be fine.

    You could hire/borrow a powerful mower to give it a good cut, then cut regularly (every few days) with your electric mower, so it doesn’t get too long again.
