What maintenance is essential to do on a lawn mower every year?

I haven't done any maintenance on my lawn mower in three years other than clean it. What is recommended? Oil Change, Filter Change, Blade sharpening, etc....

Given you haven’t done any maintenance; I’d do the whole thing: oil change, new spark plug, air filter change (buy 2 so you have an extra) and either a new blade or have the one you have sharpened.

Then check your owner’s manual for the recommendations on service after this. Most recommend an oil change after around 100 hours and blade sharpening when you notice it’s not cutting as well as it was or if you hit something with the blade. Changing the air filter now and about 1/2 through the season will help also. A dirty air filter keeps the engine from getting enough air and it won’t work as well or as efficiently.

you might get a lot of people saying you need to spend spend spend but my mom has owned the same lawn mower for over ten years and has never done anything in terms of maintenance. all we do is brush the grass off it every time we use it and this has worked for us.

If you are after a good looking lawn. Blade is very important. If you buy a new one be sure that it is sharp. Most new blades do not come sharpened. A clean cut is very important for a nice lawn. The rest is kinda a gimme. Air filter should be cleaned after every two or three mowings and you will never have to buy another one. I would say oil change once a year. Gas should be drained at the end of the season. If you keep it clean and oil good you won’t have to buy another ever. And mulch do not bag unless it is your first mowing of the year and you are scalping.

You should, according to how much you use the mower, change the oil once or twice per season for average use. Check and clean or replace the filter at the same time. I sharpen the blade annually and replace it if badly damaged or every 3 or 4 years. At season end, drain all oil and gas and start fresh at season beginning. Put a new spark plug at season beginning. You’ll keep that mower a long time. Don’t forget to clean grass, etc, off underside after every use.
