what would make my lawn mower engine begin to rase at high speed?

i was mowing and all at once it just revved up. throttle control had no effect so i had to shut it off before it just blew apart. It's a B&S VTEK Twin 20 engine on a Craftsman rider mower.

Stuck throttle cable. W-D-40, and manually moving the throttle cable back and forth,

Jammed throttle? See what is happening at the carburettor when you open and close the throttle. Is the lever moving with the cable or does it stay stationery while the cable moves? Sounds like a job for Q20 or similar lubricant.

Your motor is racing because the throttle return spring is no good.
