Which lawn mower brands/models to avoid?

And which to recommend. I'm looking to get a self-propelled walking mower - nothing fancy really just want something that will last a while.

Scooch has not got a clue. Use to be John Deere was the way to go but now days they are making the mowers cheaper and will not stand behind anything they sell. I would go with anything with a Briggs & Straton Engine on it. You might be able to go to Sears and find a good mower now days.

I highly recommend Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 12 Amp 19-Inch Electric Mulching Mower with Rear Bag

I have always wanted to try an electric mower. After we recently purchased our new home, I decided to try the corded Black & Decker Electric Lawn Mower (MM875). Our lot is on the large size which is why I did not purchase their cordless model. Our new sod had just been put in and after the required 3-4 week waiting period, it was ready to be mowed. Our new home has 4 very conveniently located electric outlets. This mower had plenty of power to cut the new thick grass. It took a while to get used to the cord but I have no problems with it now.

I am very happy with my purchase. There is no more gas and oil to deal with. And it starts right up every time with no cords to pull. I use the mulcher exclusively and the clippings are so fine that they disappear right into the lawn. Before I used it for the first time, I followed some advice that I read on these reviews about spraying the blade and undercarriage with PAM. What a great idea – it worked. Cleanups are a breeze when I am done.

I grew up with gasoline engine powered lawn mowers but now would never go back. Even on my larger than average lot, I have no problems with this mower. I also got a great deal on this mower through http://astore.amazon.com/buy_cheap-20/detail/B00005AKZI I just watched the price for a while and when it dropped one day to $215, I ordered it. It was on my doorstep within 1 week.
5 STARS for this item as far as I am concerned.
    I hope this has helped.

Most mowers today have Briggs engines and are made by MTD. I think that the key is to get a mower with what you want on it at a good price. Maintenance is the key to long life. You have to change the oil in the engine, lube moving parts and keep the mower clean, that includes the under side. Most any of them will last for years if taken care of. Left without care they will all give you problems in a couple of years. You are bound to get a lot of confusing answers to this question but the bottom line is maintenance.

Mowers themselves are pretty much the same. It’s the engines that matter.
I’ve been a mechanic for a very long time and I fix just about everything. If this is going to be worked on by you, I recommend Briggs and Stratton engine. They’re the easiest to work on, and they last for ever. I’ve got a 1973 sears walk behind mower with a B&S and it’s still running just fine.

I don’t like the quality of Tecumseh carburetors. They plug up easily internally and can not be repaired. You have to change the carburetors every year.

Honda’s are pretty good, but they’re a pain in the ass to work on. And the parts are expensive.

John Deere stuff parts have to be bought from john deere. They look like B&S engines, but the part numbers don’t match up.

if you stayed away from toro and lawn boy, plus b&s engines, you wouldn’t have much choice left. i have had a toro with a b&s engine, a self propelled model for years with absolutely no problems of any kind and it starts on the 1st or 2nd pull always. best mower i have ever had.

    I wouldn’t avoid Toro.

I’ve had a Personal Pace for 9 years, and it still starts on the first pull, and has NEVER had a problem. The Personal Pace is great because it matches whatever speed you wish to walk. If you speed up, it speeds up.
