Why is the battery dead on my riding mower?

I have a 1989 Honda riding lawn mower (Model number HT-R3811) The battery is not charging. If I charge it and start it, it will run for as long as the battery is charged. the engine is not charging the battery. I am not too familiar with small engines since there is no alternator. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
thanks, I just replaced the battery last summer.

    Take it to the local Honda service center. Either the charging circuit is bad or there is a short that is draining the system. Honda charger is built in to the engine electronics, not something the layman can service.

    Time for a new battery. they do not last forever
