An electric mower would be fine if you have a small yard and outside access to electricity that can supply the entire area needing to be mowed.

Electric mowers are cleaner in more ways than one. Yes, they are better for the environment. They also do not require as much maintenance, such as changing the oil, filling the gas, sparkplugs, etc. Not to mention oil leaks, gas leaks and such that may have to be cleaned up.

A gas mower would probably be better if you have a larger area to mow or do not have outside electrical outlets.

Since it doesn't have a 2 stroke engine, it produces less air pollution than gas. It is also much quieter. If you can use solar power to recharge then you'll recharge it without paying for electricity and less pollution from the electrical generation plant.

RenMan is right on. Air pollution isnt limited to 2 cycle engines. Four cycle engines pollute less but pollute none-the-less. You wont have that with an electric mower. Electrics are typically cheaper than gasoline powered mowers, are considerably lighter which makes them easier to push and generally cheaper/easier to repair/maintain.

Some drawbacks are that dang cord, less power and I have yet to see a self-propelled electric although there might be one.
